Jaques of London Chess pieces Fischer Spassky 3.75"
This lot is a wonderful set of Jacques Fischer Spassky chess pieces, from ca. 1970. The chess pieces are made of boxwood and ebony and pretty heavily weighted. All pieces are equipped with green felt. Unique about this set is that the height of the king is 3.75 inches, pieces with this height are now no longer produced by Jaques.
The pieces are manufactured by the very reputable Jaques of London. This can be identified by different characteristics: Stamped on the white king is "Jaques London" and the knights and rooks on the side of the king feature a red crown. Also the corresponding mahogany chess box carries the logo of Jaques and the signature of Howard Staunton. It is not clear whose the additional signature in the green felt is, possibly a famous chess player.
The Jaques Fischer Spassky chess pieces can be safely stored away in their original, mahogany box, lined with green felt. The key is missing, unfortunately. Both the box and the chess pieces are in good condition, one black pawn had a fracture and was glued, and one knight is missing an unobtrusive piece of the ear, see last two pictures. The chessboard depicted in the photos is for illustration purposes and is not included in the lot. A board with chess fields of 5 cm by 5 cm is recommended.
The Fischer Spassky chess pieces are of great historical importance. The design was by the American Robert J. (Bobby) Fischer for his world famous match in 1972 with Boris Spassky of the Soviet Union. With his fantastic victory Fischer ended the hegemony of the Soviet Union.
The height of the king is 9.2 cm (3.75") and the total weight of pieces and box is no less than 2.4 kg.
The entire lot will be packaged safely and shipped by registered and insured mail.
