Engraved by Hendrik Floris van Langren. In the inverted text, Kaerius acknowledges the adjustments of the lion of Von Aitzing: "typographicam Leonis Belgici primus in lucem edidit D. Michael Aitsingerius Austriacus" ("this scene of the Leo Belgicus was first publsihed by the Austrian Michael von Aitzing").
The Netherlands, shown in the form of a lion, came to be with the Austrian Michael von Aitzing (ca. 1530-98), who added the Leo Belgicus map in this book Leone Belgico (1583). He explains that Caesar had mentioned in his "comments", the 'Belgians' as the strongest tribes, and he therefore decided to introduce the Netherlands in the shape of a lion.
