Nice characteristic impressionist artwork of Marten Melsens (1870-1947) of around 1900. Very well known galleries and the famous auction programs. His oeuvre has been valued for its originality since the very beginning - his first exhibitions date from the 1890s. "Interpreter of rural indulgences of the region that is famous around Antwerp for the boorish and spirited inhabitants", he is called by critics "our jolly modern Bruegel, tingling of real life and colour", or "frolic painter of peasants from the polder". Others call him: "The humorous observer of the country man", or said: "Melsen excels in the vivid display of yokels", or saw "a lot of deliberate naivety in the work of Marten Melsen". They see the work of Melsens as "an epic and symbolic caricature of the village”. The large city of Brussels was at the end of the 19th century a world centre of art, where Neo-Impressionism and Art Nouveau reign supreme. In the early 1900's, however, Melsen follows a completely different route on his own, that of the Dutch and Flemish masters of the 16th and 17th centuries, who had uncovered the purebred national character. This attachment to the old tradition of painting is remarkable, because the art at the time was either characterized by social tension, or by the search for a glorified, ideal world, as in preraphaetite symbolism.
