A.M. Gorter (1866-1933) - Landschap met beek en koeien in de verte
The painter A.M. Gorter lived and worked mainly in Amsterdam. He was an important landscape painter, who drew inspiration for his paintings in the Vecht region and in the eastern Netherlands, such as Twente, the Achterhoek and Drenthe. He preferred to paint the tranquil nature with the changes in light and the different colours of the seasons. In that sense, his work is related to the The Hague School.
His favourite seasons were autumn and the early spring. Mirroring water and birches are a recurring theme in his work. Gorter was a student of the Rijksnormaalschool and of the Rijksakademie in Amsterdam, where he was taught by Dr. Gorter. P.J.H. Cuypers. He was a member of the societies "Pulchri Studio", “St. Lucas" and "Art et Amicitiae". He also received many awards. It is nice to know that Gorter gave advice to Queen Wilhelmina. He also taught M.J. Bies, C.J. Drake jr.
Museums: a.o. Haags Gemeentemuseum, De Lakenhal Leiden, Teylers Museum Haarlem, Zeeuws Museum Middelburg and the Rijksmuseum Twenthe Enschede.
