Documents and graphics about one of the most spectacular installations by land-art artists, Christo and Jeanne Claude (The Umbrellas):
- An original topographic map used by the Japanese engineers collaborating in the installation of the ambitious project in Ibaraki (Japan). Vegetable paper map of the 80´s. It has the main sign in Japanese language that says: "Photo of the topographic map of" The Umbrellas "by CHRISTO (ク リ ス ト) no 1". Dated 28-8-1989.
Map Size: 100 x 68 cm.
Numbered No. 1 (scale 1: 5000), of a series of 4 of the same size.
- Section plan or location of the umbrellas in one of the Ibaraki spaces. With red dots of the exact locations of the umbrellas in their precise installation.
In Japan, Christo and his staff had to negotiate agreements with 435 separate landowners in three districts and work their way through endless bureaucracies for proper permits and it was necessary to place the umbrellas correctly.
Map Size: 116 x 78 cm.
Numbered No. 1 (scale 1: 1000), from a series of 5 maps numbered from 1 to 5.
- The lot includes 2 magnificent photo-lithographs of great quality edited by the Barcelona-based POLIGRAFA, one of the installation in the USA, another of the installation in Japan. Paper-cardboard of great grammage. Size of both: 95 x 64 cm.
- A photocopy of a letter from the Japan Shield Engineering addressed to Henry Scott is attached. And a photocopy of the envelope (in which the plans of our collection were sent) of the Yokohama Kogyo Co, Ltd (founded in 1947 and is based in Osaka, Japan until 2013), manufacturer and distributor of steel structures, which were necessary for the realization of the great project in USA and JAPAN by Christo and Jeanne Claude. The plans are original documents requested by the collaborator and project director, Henry Scott Stokes, who worked with Christo during the decade of the 80's in the preparation of the installation of "The Umbrellas" (and which was a famous New York Times correspondent). in that country). The maps were commissioned to several Japanese engineers (M. Yasui, M. Sasaki and others, official engineers of the Japanese country and of companies that collaborated in the realization of the anchors and the steel bases of the umbrellas and that needed to know the topography of Ibaraki).
"One of the essential facts of this project is to demonstrate similarities and differences in the way life is lived in these two places in the world," he said. "The project is about comparison, like a musical score, a symphony in two parts - one part slow and one part fast." "What I want to create is a poetical colonization of the space," (Christo).
It comes from collector of work and documentation of the projects of Christo and Jeanne Claude.
