Jean Calogero - Figura
From Catania, Jean Calogero moved to Paris to attend painting classes at the École des beaux-arts.
Calogero made France his second home and began an intense exhibition activity, which would often lead him to America and Japan. In France, the artist from Catania had the first artistic successful results. At the feet of Montmatre, at number 11 of Boulevard de Clichy, he set his studio by purchasing the place that had belonged to Degas, in a building where Picasso had lived. In Paris, Calogero was very lucky and won many prizes. He was involved in the most lively moments of the mid-century Parisian artistic flurry, participating in many exhibitions and major debates. In 1949 he had his first artistic contract, signed for the Galerie Hervé in Paris, known for following the development of the young European painting in those years. In 1950 he had his first solo exhibition.
His first monograph dates back to 1954 and was curated by Maximilien Gauthier, one of the greatest French critics of that time who, with great skill, succeeded in tracing the artist’s ambitions and personality in a wonderfully thorough way.
In 1957, in Paris, he received the highest award for living artists: the Great Silver Medal. In 1959, he was included in the international art catalogue BENEZIT among the most influential painters worldwide.
